The 2001 PKC Super Stakes Championship is in the history books. The hunt will go down as a history maker in many ways. It was a hunt in which we saw a two-year old pup get in the semifinals and then see his own pup win third place in the Junior Super Stakes Championship. It was a hunt in which we saw a father/son handler combination get their both their hounds in the Finals, one in the one-year old division, the other as a two-year old. Here’s the scoop.

Brian Gray of South Bend, Indiana had a pup named Drop Dead Fred. The story is that Fred bred his dam when he was seven months old, by accident. Both Fred, and his pup, Raccoon Valley Homer, hunted by Keith Holly of Hickory Flats, MS and owned by Alan Smith of Knoxville, TN hunted in the Super Stakes hunt; Fred as a two-year old and Homer as a Junior. Both made the semifinals and Homer advanced to the Final, winning third overall. The rest of the story is that Curt Sybert and Doug Jackson, both of Ohio, bought Fred before the semifinal round.

The second amazing “family” story is that of Randall and Ashley Hopkins of Lascassas, TN. Ashley handles the Tequila Sunrise pup he co-owns with Buzz Lynch of College Grove, TN. You will remember “Son” as the two-year old Breeder’s Showcase Champion, crowned last July. Sun made the Finals of the two-year old division in the SS Championship this year. A younger brother to Sun, owned by Ashley and his dad Randall, and handled by Randall, made the finals in the one year old division. The younger pup’s name is Rat Poison. Both pups were sired by the Rat Attack dog, owned by Buzz Lynch and Kevin Turner. Sun would go on to win the Senior Super Stakes title and Poison would finish second in a story that proves the strength of family ties, in dogs and in handlers.

We congratulate the owners, handlers, and breeders of these pups who prove that a combination of breeding, training, and the will to compete can produce very big results in PKC Super Stakes. We also thank all that participated at Aurora this year and especially those who left their dogs at home to judge and guide. It was a great Super Stakes Championship that will live on in the memories of all who were here to congratulate the winners on Monday night.
