Winter Classic Opener Draws 197
Apparently that old song beckoned to a lot of hunters who found their way to the east central Mississippi town of Louisville, population 7300, for opening night of the 2002 PKC Winter Classic. The Thursday night entry didn't set a record but it darn sure put some solid entry numbers on the board with 197 hounds making the entry deadline.
The Thursday night hunt, featuring $500 Added money on the Open Event and on the Pup Derby, saw 131 big dogs and 66 pups lining up for a shot at PKC gold. A Final Four appearance in either category will pay $638 to first place or $290 on the split in PKC or "Open" money. Add the added (no pun intended) and a first place could pay more than one thousand greenbacks to the handler with the confidence and the ability to hunt and win first overall. We'll see after midnight if anyone is sporting that kind of confidence when the Final Four hounds are called in for photos. Each of the 197 entries in the woods tonight hope they'll hear Mr. Roy or Roger ask them if they are "Hunting or Splitting" at the deadline for return of scorecards. Those winning their casts will earn $50.38 in the Pup Derby and $84.22 in the Open Event.
Temperatures in the mid-40's at draw out will decrease to the mid-30's overnight under clear skies - perfect hunting weather. We wish all the hunters a safe and enjoyable hunt there in Winston, Noxubee, and surrounding counties on night number one of this prestigious hunt. The PKC Winter Classic is staged just east of the famed Natchez Trace Parkway between Columbus and Jackson and about 40 miles west of the Alabama line. There's still time to get down there for the Friday and Saturday night hunts, each of which feature $1000 added money on the Open Events and Pup Derbies.
