Shelbyville, IN - It was “standing room only” Wednesday night at the Shelby County Sportsman’s Club, just southeast of Indianapolis. As the sun went down, the grounds filled with hunter’s vehicles. The vintage frame clubhouse, typical of many across coon country was literally bursting at the seams, spilling its content of hunters out into the Indiana night. Obviously the facility was not built for the kind of crowds the PKC $1000 Open Event and Pup Derby brought its way on Wednesday night. In fact, the pups and big dogs had to drawn and called in shifts as 148 hounds met the entry deadline for the midweek hunt.

Co-hunt directors John Long and Tom Carter did a bang up job, readily admitting that they had no idea what the entry would be. What they may have lacked in experience with large numbers of hunters, they certainly made up for with hard work and enthusiasm. PKC staffers Roy Tramble, Steve Fielder, and Rick Stretch were on hand to assist with the draw and it went smoothly. There were 27 casts of Open dogs and 11 casts of pups and all but 5 of them came in by the 3:00 AM deadline with plus points on the cards, a tribute to the Hoosier guides.
