Despite a night that all those in attendance at the PKC Futurity hope will not repeat itself, a night in w hich a handler and a top coonhound were lost, 244 hounds hunted in the second night of qualifying and sixteen of them emerged victorious after the late round to advance to the semifinals tonight.
As if the death of W. E. "Earl" Beck, Jr. was not enough, Merlin Hershberger's Bear, Jr., a top-winning Black and Tan pup was killed on the highway on Friday night. Bear, Jr. had won the Blue Ribbon Event this year in LaGrand, Iowa and was a much-heralded young hound. Our sympathies go to Merlin in the loss of his dog Bear, Jr.
