Batesville, IN - There are a lot of success stories in the world of coon hunting. Many of them have a fam iliar ring. Everyone knows that coon hunter John Wick build a healthy business around the sport. Innovator Dayne Phillips invented the Nite Lite battery light for coon hunters and parlayed it into a tremendous business before selling it to its present owners. Early PKC competitor Wayne Green has his Prowler Lights and Quick Trac recovery systems, and the list goes on and on.

The newest comer to the field of hunters turned suppliers is Jerry Moll of Batesville, Indiana. Unlike Wick, Phillips, or Green, each of which based their businesses on a product idea such as the Wick Chap, or the Coon Hunter’s Favorite, Moll is hitching his hopes for success on necessity and his reputation in the sport of coon hunting.

Moll is recognized as one of the most successful of Walker breeders in recent years and his record in competition is well documented. Final Four finishes in major events in both registries have rocketed Moll to the forefront of the nation’s most recognizable and successful competition hunters and breeders of Walker hounds.

More than a year ago, Moll faced what many Americans have faced in recent years. A job of many years with Wood- Mizer Products, Inc., a sawmill manufacturer was either outsourced or became a victim of the all to frequent downsizing that we see companies going through these days. Moll, with a wife and three children struggled with the idea of opening a business after difficulty in replacing a job that had provided well for so long. Finally the decision was made and the result is the recent opening of Salt Creek Supply.

Here’s what I recently learned about Jerry’s new business:

Salt Creek Supply is located in southeast Indiana at the intersection of State Roads 46 and 129. That’s 45 miles west of Cincinnati, Ohio, 65 miles east of Indianapolis, Ind., 50 miles south of Richmond, Ind., and 45 miles east of North Vernon, Ind., where the PKC Labor Day Classic is held each year.

“We have the full line of Purina products from small animals to horses, specializing in the ProPlan line for dogs. Since Purina is the new major sponsor for PKC events, we believe in supporting those that support us. We are carrying the Valley Creek 20-volt belt lights and Muck boots with Valley Creek Chaps,” Moll told me. “We are also carrying a full line of tracking systems and collars ranging in brands from Wildlife, to Tracker, to the "K" collar. We also have Tri-Tronics E-Collar systems, Zepp Squallers, and Valley Creek bibs.”

The accompanying photos reveal a huge stock of nylon, DayGlo and leather collars with nametag applications. Moll is also carrying a large variety of dog leads ranging from leather, to cable, to DayGlo, beta (a composite stretch-type material), and chain. I asked Jerry about mail order and he told me that’s coming down the road.

We at PKC certainly wish Jerry and Brenda success with their new venture and encourage members to visit Salt Creek Supply when in need of dog food or hunting supplies.
