Sixteen-year old Tyler Young of Paris, Arkansas has won the 2004 PKC/JOY National Youth Championship! The eleventh grader, hunting a hound named Silver Dollar Hayes for veteran coon hunter Buddy Gilbert, best the cast of four on a tough night to tree a coon in the Land Between the Lakes.

Tyler hunts out of the Cecil, Arkansas club and has been hunting PKC for three years. I asked him how it felt to win the National Youth Championship and he told me, “I’m pretty excited. I really can’t believe it.” Tyler hunted Hayes three nights in the PKC World Hunt, winning his early rounds each night.

I asked Tyler how he came to hunt for Mr. Gilbert and he told me that Dustin Cannon, the 2004 National Youth Leader, lives about 20 minutes away. Dustin told Tyler that he could hunt his old stud dog if he wanted and Tyler did hunt the dog one night at the Breeder’s Showcase. Buddy was looking for someone to hunt Hayes and Tyler said, “I’m your man.” Apparently the youngster knew what he was talking about.

PKC congratulates Tyler Young for winning the prestigious PKC/JOY National Youth Championship.
