he 2011 Senior Showdown Final Four
By Amy Kovac-Thomas

Weather conditions were nasty as hunters took the woods in Lula, Mississippi to compete for a 2010 Ram 4x4 truck from Mitchell Chevrolet. Only the top winning senior dogs earn a chance to attend this prestigious event at the Isle of Capri Casino. That ability was truly going to be challenged as they faced off against each other under the inclement weather conditions. Three well-known winning male Walkers with three seasoned handlers behind them rose to the top, with a dark horse Walker female joining them proving that she and her handler could truly take on cold northern weather even if they came to the South to do so!

PCH Wipeout Zeb 3
Owned by Brad Mitchell
Handled by Jeff Travis

Zeb 3 is no stranger to the final four of the Truck Hunt. This 04 model out of Zeb Again and Dusty was in last year’s final four. Brad Mitchell was very happy to purchase this hound that combines his favorite Clover blood line with that of the successful Wipeout one.

Another winning match up for Brad was the pairing up of Jeff Travis and Zeb 3. Jeff has handled several victorious hounds for many well-known owners, and Brad felt Jeff could truly take Zeb 3 to the highest level of achievement. Over the past three years, the two have brought Brad Mitchell great success by winning the Pro-Run Off, Tennessee State Race, Reserve Walker Day Champion, Breeder’s Showcase Champion, and placing third in the World Hunt. .

Though Zeb 3 was not competed as hard in 2010, he still won the Pro Championship and Walker Days. Jeff Travis kept his handler skills honed, as he not only continued to hunt Zeb 3, but added two more young hounds to the program – Huff Hollow Homer and Flat Rock Charlene, who is out of Zeb 3. Charlene finished in the semi-finals of the Fall Super Stakes. Brad and Jeff pushed Homer hard and were rewarded for their effort by winning second in the Super Stakes and Top Pup Leader. Now he will see if he can grab the top prize for Brad with Zeb 3 in tonight’s hunt.

As they prepare for the night ahead, Jeff shared what strengths Zeb 3 will bring to this round. “Depending on his frame of mind that night, he can do it either way. He can win in thick coons or he can go find them when they’re thin.”

This is the proverbial second chance for these two. Will Jeff and Zeb bring home the truck this time? Brad and Jeff ended 2010 on top with Homer, will they start 2011 in the same position with Zeb 3?

PCH Habit’s Bad Son
Owned and handled by Chad Doolin

Bought on a whim in 2008, this 02 model out of Bad Habit and Swift Creek Jill, has brought Chad Doolin ample reward for his gamble. Chad and Son didn’t take long to become a winning team. Starting on January 1st, 2009 Chad started his goal to get a truck ticket with his new purchase and began a winning streak.

The two continued on from the first of the year to win big throughout. Their success brought them into the spotlight as Habit’s Bad Son was crowned the Arkansas State Leader, Walker Breed Winner and Top Male Leader that year. In the summer of 2010, Chad sent Son north to cooler temperatures and hot hunts with Jacob Humphreus as a handler. It was Jacob who earned Chad and Son the truck ticket that brought them here.

However, 2011 has once again been a good year for Son. Not long before this hunt, he faced off against fellow competitor this evening Bone Collector in the Final Four of the Arkansas State Hunt. It was Son who ended the cast as the state champion. Now the two will be rematched with another two formidable opponents to battle it out for a new truck.

Going into this evening, Chad shared his thoughts about how he got Son ready for this hunt and Son’s ability and strengths. “I haven’t done anything but hunt since November 20th of last year. Work was slow and I had the time to hunt him. I spent the last month and a half hunting with Ricky Hawkins. He is a former truck winner himself when he was Elmo. Ricky and I spent a lot of hours in the woods since he is hunting my new dog Tom. I think what will help Son tonight is his usual style of being by himself with a coon.

Chad Doolin was a back up judge last year as Jackie Coomer won his truck, now this year he will be out on the cast competing for one himself! Will Son pay back Chad for the chance he took on him? His first gamble on Son paid off, will this one?

PCH Bone Collector
Owned by Compton/Cannon/Smith
Handled by Doug Compton

Doug Compton and Bone Collector are no strangers to Final Fours. They were just in the Final Four at the PKC World Hunt and now they are back at it. It was a lucky break for them that bumped Doug and Bone up the list to attend this truck hunt at the last minute. Ready to roll, the two headed out to battle the elements and the competition to advance to this prestigious spot.

Bone Collector a 07 model out of Medley’s Homer and Tri-Color Stylish Nowhere already has a well-known name for winning. Doug raised him from a pup and knows the dog well and partnered up with Scott Reynolds on him. With these two as owners, Bone won a truck ticket in December of 2008 and four out six nights at the Arkansas Children’s Benefit. In January of 2009, the duo joined forces with Jack Cannon and Jim Smith. With them on board, they won the 2009 Junior Super Stakes, 2010 Arkansas State Champion, and the 2010 Arkansas State Race to their resume of success.

To bring another truck to the Smith and Cannon partnership, Doug and Bone must face off against his local rival Son once again, in addition to Zeb 3 that he has competed against in Texas and judged last year at this hunt’s late round, and newcomer Miss Molly.

Doug shared his thoughts on what strengths he thinks Bone will bring this evening. “Bone is a trailing type of dog. He will go and get a coon.” This will be helpful for Doug and Bone if the coons are laid up with the cold.

2010 was a great year for the Compton/Cannon/Smith/Vogel team as Jackie Coomer won them a truck and Tyler Young brought a World Title into them with the Outsider. Now as Doug and Bone prepare to head to the woods, one can’t help but wonder if it is now is their time to move out the backseat and into the driver’s one for the Compton/Cannon/Smith team?

S CH Brown’s Hardwood Miss Molly
Owned Barry Brown
Handler Rick St. Clair

Though she is the only female and the youngest in this Final Four, Miss Molly will be bringing her northern style to the playing field for owner Barry Brown and handler Rick St. Clair. Molly is a 06 model out of Honey Creek Harry and Unstable Miss Mable. Miss Molly has made a name for herself in Michigan, but will her reputation go South tonight?

Barry Brown has been hunting PKC for many years, but the last four years he has run hard and had success with his dogs Fly, Willie and now Miss Molly. Molly has been the Michigan leader the last two years, was the Female Leader of the Michigan Madness the first year it was hosted, and won the Clam River Classic. She has been in numerous Final Fours, but none as big as tonight’s.

Molly will be handled by Rick St. Clair who has been handling in PKC since the mid-nineties. He has watched Molly go from a dog that wouldn’t leave the truck to one that is now competing with three of PKC’s finest. Barry will quickly credit Rick for her achievements. “Everything this dog is goes to Rick”

When asked what strengths that Miss Molly brings to this Final Four, the answer was unanimous. Barry said, “She is used to the colder weather.” Rick added, “Last night, we turned loose on a skiff with 32 degree weather. Everyone was complaining. I told them that we’d love to have this type of weather at home.”

Tonight’s temperatures are supposed to be 31 degrees and clear. Miss Molly has the cold weather on her side, but not the wet, icy conditions that allowed her to shine bright last night. Will this female be able to leave all her competition chilling out again tonight while she burns up the woods? That 4x4 would be quite helpful for her owner and handler as they make their way back North on Sunday.

Since the weather is too bad for most of our members to go coon hunting, we will try to provide you with a little entertainment on the computer. Our network service is not the best, but I will try not to use the "bad words".
